Economy, comparison, and hierarchy in Dakar. Isma#x00EB;l M OYA , CNRS, Laboratoire d#x2019;ethnologie et de Sociologie Comparative. According to Louis Dumont, comparison is the starting point of any anthropological analysis: an experiment that elicits differences to Essay Combating with provide ideas and justify analytical standpoints. Yet what difference might fuel a comparative experiment in a global African metropolis such as Dakar, the capital of Senegal? I suggest a comparison with the autonomy and primacy of the economic in Euro-America to produce a radical constrast. Man Leonardo. This text first examines Dumont#x2019;s work on the #x201C;economic#x201D; as a value conflicting with the political in Euro-America. Then it focuses on Dakar, where money and relations are two sides of the same coin.

Following the money trail, it explores Dakar#x2019;s sociality, in which women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies of birth and marriage are more highly valued than the local economy, yet vividly condemned in discourses as a local custom preventing the full realization of economic development and Islam. Confronting these moral contradictions and the primacy of women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies over the economic in Dakar#x2019;s sociality, the text proposes to distinguish between morality and values and acknowledges women#x2019;s ceremonies as an about Japanese MAGIC #x201C;unavowed#x201D; value. It then argues that moral contradictions of this kind mark the contrast between different levels of value and the existence of a hierarchy that articulates incompatible conceptions within the same social formation. Keywords: Senegal, value, hierarchy, money, economy, sociality, ceremonial exchange, Islam. Louis Dumont#x2019;s comparative method is radical and purposely unimaginative.

As Dumont (1991: 8) put it: #x201C;I don#x2019;t have any idea, comparison provides it.#x201D; Dumont#x2019;s perspective is not radical because it drastically intensifies cultural differences, but rather because its epistemology is radical: comparison has no a priori object. It is an [152]experiment in which differences are elicited to provide ideas and justify analytical standpoints. I propose in this article that a city such as Dakar, the shakespeare 65, capital of Senegal, be treated as a challenge for comparative anthropology along the lines of Dumont#x2019;s project. Dakar is a West African metropolis with a population of three million. Japanese Espionage MAGIC. It is the capital of an independent and virtually democratic state, and a place that has seen massive emigration and immigration. Of Texas. It has been a Muslim society for centuries, has been in contact with Europe for nearly five hundred years, and is located in an area that has always been connected with trans-Saharan trade. In other words, Dakar represents an obvious vantage point for a study of globalization, social change, or cultural hybridization. Yet it is not the ideal place for eliciting radical differences. The intertwining of modernity with tradition, of the local with the global, makes it almost impossible to draw a comparison on any given cultural element#x2014;especially the most enticing for those who seeks out difference#x2014;without immediately essentializing it. What kind of difference might fuel a comparative experiment in about Combating MAGIC this context?

In this article, I suggest an answer, famously coined by Bill Clinton: #x201C;It#x2019;s the economy, stupid!#x201D; A familiar and problematic category indeed, and not one of most appealing from an exoticist point of view. Let#x2019;s begin by highlighting different ways of da vinci enacting comparison. Marcel Detienne#x2019;s book Comparing the incomparable (2008) is a vibrant manifesto for a comparative method that roots out differences and denies the irreducible singularity of the things compared. In the second chapter, #x201C;Constructing comparables,#x201D; he gives a vivid description of how he began his comparative enterprise and outlines his method. It all started with stimulating exchanges within a small group of historians and anthropologists gathered around a common question#x2014;namely, #x201C;What is a site?#x201D; Then, #x201C;in order to access the Essay about Japanese, teeming variety of modes of there basic systems: job order costing and periodic costing. territorialization,#x201D; they felt the need #x201C;to select a category, making sure that it was generic enough to allow the beginnings of a comparison but neither too general nor too specific to any particular culture#x201D; (ibid.: 25). In other words, Detienne#x2019;s comparative method seeks out Combating Espionage differences but still relies on a generic question (#x201C;What is a site?#x201D;) that defines the starting point. 451 By Essay. Comparison requires preexisting comparative categories that are ultimately the product of a form of eidetic reduction. About Combating Japanese Espionage With. In contrast, Dumont#x2019;s radical comparative perspective doesn#x2019;t start with a generic object or question.

It foregrounds difference as the absolute fulcrum (Dumont 1977: 11) upon which comparison draws exclusively. Are Two Basic Of Cost Accounting Systems: Job Order And Periodic. This is so because, according to Dumont, the meaning of a single feature, however important, can only be grasped from its relations with other particular features within a given social formation. #x201C;A particular feature, if taken not in about Japanese Espionage with itself but in its concrete position within a system, #x2026; can have a totally different meaning according to the position it occupies. That is to say, from a sociological standpoint it is actually different#x201D; (Dumont 1980: 253). One must always take into account the relative value of any element within the Essay, configuration to which it belongs. Combating Japanese With MAGIC. In other words, the hierarchy (i.e., value relations) present in each configuration is renaissance da vinci, essential.

However, there is much that is implicit in any configuration and especially its fundamental tenets, that is to say, value relations (Dumont 1977: 19#x2013;20). Thus, the issue with comparison is not merely that we cannot avoid [153]#x201C;misunderstanding others#x2019; views,#x201D; but also that we are required to deal with the implicit dimension of both #x201C;their#x201D; views and #x201C;ours.#x201D; According to about Combating Japanese Espionage MAGIC Dumont (1986: 8), the only way to explore this complexity #x201C;is when comparison shows discord between two different hierarchies.#x201D; Each comparison, thus, can only uncover a partial aspect, and yet evinces necessary but unexpressed relations on shakespeare 65, which the analysis can draw afterward. Dumont repeated many times that this kind of comparison is a recursive and an almost endless process. He has always been very elusive on where and how it should start. In his work, the anthropologist appears somehow compelled by ethnography to rediscover a familiar but problematic notion of our common thought, which provides a comparative perspective (in Dumont#x2019;s case, India elicited hierarchy: ibid.: 7).

Drawing on Dumont#x2019;s work on economy as a value in Euro-America, and my ethnography in Thiaroye-sur-Mer, a Wolof-speaking poor suburb of Dakar, in this article I explore Dakar#x2019;s sociality, in Essay Japanese MAGIC which women#x2019;s ceremonial exchanges are more highly valued than the local economy but unanimously condemned in the name of both economic rationality and Islam. I then develop the argument that comparison can also reveal whether moral contradictions evince a conflict bewteen competing values or eclipse an halse unavoyed hierarchy. Dumont#x2019;s work was profoundly inspired by Karl Polanyi#x2019;s book The great transformation (1944), and especially by his fundamental thesis on the disembedding of economies from society. About Combating With. According to Dumont, Polanyi demonstrated that the j wetherspoons, constitution of the economic components of social life in Essay Combating Espionage with a separate subsystem that subordinates the by laurie, rest, which took place over the course of the about Japanese Espionage with MAGIC, nineteenth century, was an exceptional event in human history. Dumont#x2019;s first comparative work on Euro-America addressed the autonomy and primacy of the economic aspect as a key expression of renaissance man leonardo individualism, and as the triumph of Combating Espionage MAGIC a form of social life marked by the separation and unresolved tension between economics and politics (Dumont 1977). He repeatedly praised The great transformation as an anthropological masterpiece (Dumont 1977, 1983, 1986, 1994), and helped bring Polanyi#x2019;s ideas to anderson a French audience. Essay Combating MAGIC. 1 He was also a fierce critic of Polanyi#x2019;s subsequent work (1957) as an economic anthropologist. 2 His criticism revolved around the definition of the by laurie anderson, word #x201C;economic.#x201D; Polanyi made a famous distinction between two meanings of the term, one formal and the other substantive:

The substantive meaning of about Espionage MAGIC economic derives from man#x2019;s dependence for his living upon nature and renaissance da vinci, his fellows. It refers to the interchange with his natural and social environment, in so far as this results in supplying him with the means of material want-satisfaction. The [154]formal meaning of economic derives from the logical character of the means#x2013;ends relationship, as apparent in such words as #x201C;economical#x201D; or #x201C;economizing.#x201D; It refers to a definite situation of choice, namely, that between the different uses of means induced by an insufficiency of those means. (Polanyi 1957: 243) For Polanyi, the formalist definition only applied to market economies, whereas the substantive definition was universal, and thus of use to comparative anthropology. This distinction gave rise to a vigorous debate in the 1960s, which saw two trends in economic anthropology (formalist and substantivist) taking opposite sides on how to identify the economic aspect in comparative anthropology (Isaac 2005).

Dumont took an original#x2014;and yet overlooked#x2014;position in this debate. He argued that, contra Polanyi, the question of the status of the economy in Essay Japanese with social formations alone could not lead to an anthropological comparison, because it assumes the empirical existence of #x201C;the economy#x201D; as an external reality present in any given social formation. On the contrary, according to Dumont, the primacy of the economic dimension is not the disembedding of a fundamental domain of social life that is or was already present: #x201C;It should be obvious that there is twisted by laurie halse anderson, nothing like an economy out there, unless and until men construct such an Essay about Combating Japanese MAGIC object#x201D; (Dumont 1986: 33). Dumont#x2019;s methodological stance is not, however, to man leonardo da vinci disclose an error or a truth regarding the mode of existence of the economy (e.g., Latour and L#x00E9;pinay 2009). From a comparative point a view, the economy is Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage with, a construct, and not a given on which a plurality of Annexation competing definitions 3 may be identified but none is beyond discussion. Essay Japanese With MAGIC. Instead, according to Dumont (1977: 24), one should start from Polanyi#x2019;s thesis on the primacy of the sonnet, economic dimension and identify the presupposition on which the object of economics is constructed in the location of this same object in Euro-American social formations. In From Mandeville to Marx , he studied the genesis of economics as an about Combating with intellectual category distinct from politics.

One of his conclusions was that #x201C;the economic category rests on a value judgment, an Annexation implicit hierarchy. It supposes that something else is excluded or subordinated#x201D; (ibid.: 26). Dumont never sought to define economics, or to compare it with something else (such as a cosmology, a religion, or a culture). Instead, he drew on a comparative difference to Essay about Combating Japanese MAGIC elicit a value: the job order costing and periodic, autonomy and primacy of the economic dimension as a peculiar feature of Euro-American social formations. The economic category can be defined not in itself, but as a function of its value relation with other categories, especially the move, described by Polanyi, toward a valueencompassing relation of the economic over the political (Dumont 1986: 104#x2013;12). Dumont concluded his study of the genesis of economic ideology by Essay about Japanese MAGIC, considering the Technology in Fahrenheit Essay, consequences of the conflicting relation of Combating with MAGIC value between economics and Of Texas Essay, politics. He was perplexed by well-meaning thinkers#x2014;and especially economists such as Keynes#x2014;who proposed that we cease behaving like slaves of the about Combating Espionage with MAGIC, economic process and downgrade the economy to the status of a means for achieving #x201C;the real human ends, which are social#x201D; (Dumont 1977: 107). For Dumont, a program such as this would most likely fail, or succeed at the cost of twisted by laurie anderson weakening or destroying the individual as a value.

According to him, [155]In such a case, we should likely return to subordination, unless we are able to produce at short notice a consensus bearing a still unseen third path. #x201C;The economic#x201D; is a major category of Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage our thought, and constraints inherent to our ideology are such that we are not at liberty to decree that, from now on, it will be downgraded to the rank of a servant. (Dumont 1977: 107) In the second French edition of From Mandeville to Marx , Dumont felt the need to Technology in Fahrenheit introduce a clarification of his views. #x201C;Until further notice, subordination in its natural form, as a value, is excluded from Combating Espionage with MAGIC, our ideology. It would therefore only be reintroduced in a shameful, pathological form, that is to say, as oppression#x201D; (Dumont [1977] 1985: 132). 451 By Ray Bradburry. Two pages later, he concludes: #x201C;So far, the choice between wealth as an Combating end and forced, pathological, forms of subordination is our fate#x201D; (ibid.: 134). Dumont#x2019;s contention, and especially the last conclusion, may appear to be an uncompromising neoliberal view; however, his true position is radically different. This is in Fahrenheit 451 by, not a claim on the order of facts that would, for example, call into question the legitimacy of or possibility for a political body to act upon the economy as an external, objective reality.

Rather, it is a warning about the limits and constraints exerted by value systems on power, especially on Essay about Combating Espionage MAGIC, what Dumont called #x201C;artificialism#x201D;: the idea that power or strength of will has an j wetherspoons unlimited capacity to fully transform the world in accordance with an Essay Combating Espionage MAGIC ideal and therefore to sift the good aspects, which will be kept, from the bad, which will be discarded. #x201C;Ideology has the power to transform social reality only in Fahrenheit Ray Bradburry Essay, between certain limits and when we ignore those limits we produce the about Combating Japanese Espionage, contrary of what was desired#x201D; (Dumont 1977: 12). Dumont#x2019;s aim was neither to naturalize nor to j wetherspoons eradicate power, but to understand its limits. His work is haunted by totalitarianism, and he repeatedly highlighted the about Espionage MAGIC, dangers and tragic consequences of the idea that power can transform society rapidly and fundamentally. Of Texas. #x201C;There are other limits to modern artificialism than those ecology has begun to teach us, limits that follow from the social nature of about Espionage MAGIC man as thinking being#x201D; (ibid.: 108). For Dumont (1986: 92), artificialism clashes with society as whole, not in the corporate sense of a group that would oppose a resistance to change (brought by another group) in renaissance the name of moral principles (Thompson 1971), but as a system of values. The question of the economy illustrates particularly vividly the Combating Espionage with, limits imposed by a system of values. Twisted Halse Anderson. The autonomy of the economic dimension has tangible consequences, a set of constraints that seem to impose themselves on social formations that politics is not able to fully control. This situation is dramatically illustrated by the consequences of economic and financial globalization in general, especially in recent years, and with MAGIC, portrays the Annexation Of Texas Essay, predicaments of Western states that are struggling with markets against a background of financial crisis and social turmoil. About With. However, according to Dumont, the autonomy and primacy of the economic dimension is neither the expression of an shakespeare sonnet 65 objective fact (social formations are subjected to natural #x201C;economic laws#x201D;) nor the about Japanese Espionage MAGIC, result of renaissance man leonardo a power relation between social units and ideas (such as class struggles, the about Combating Japanese MAGIC, power of finance, or government corruption). The autonomy and primacy of the economic dimension is a paramount value, which, like any value, can never be fully realized. However, this value includes a [156]claim#x2014;or a tendency#x2014;to move toward a value-encompassing relation over the whole of society, 4 thereby challenging the by laurie anderson, political. Dumont is also one of the few commentators on Polanyi to explicitly agree with the other major thesis of The great transformation : that the Essay Combating with, emancipation of the economic domain is a major social and ideological fact, but that at an empirical level, economic liberalism combines with its opposite.

This is what Polanyi (1944: 136) calls the #x201C;double movement#x201D;: market societies are constituted by a movement of liberalism to expand the anderson, scope of the Essay about Combating Espionage MAGIC, market, and Annexation Of Texas Essay, a countermovement resisting the #x201C;disembedding#x201D; of the economy. Polanyi#x2019;s double movement is a fair illustration of Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage with what Joel Robbins refers to as #x201C;hierarchical dynamism#x201D; in twisted by laurie his contribution to this issue: a value is Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage MAGIC, never homogeneously dominant; it is always found in Annexation combination with other values, in this case economy and political power (Dumont 1994: 8#x2013;9). Dumont (1983: xv) writes in this regard: #x201C;One can observe in the economic field something called otherwise the #x2018;coexistence of Essay about Japanese Espionage with MAGIC opposites.#x2019; It is an empirical coexistence, more or less obscure or shameful, a kind of mixture with no specific formula.#x201D; In sum, Dumont#x2019;s contention, contra Polanyi, is that the Annexation Essay, economic domain is Essay Combating Japanese with MAGIC, not a comparative object. However, the autonomy and primacy of the economic dimension as a #x201C;modern Euro-American#x201D; value, conflicting with politics, contains a comparative potential for anthropology, provided that it elicits a difference between social formations. In the comparative experiment that follows, I compare Dumont#x2019;s view of the economy and there are two types accounting job order, the limits a value system imposes on artificialism with my ethnography of Dakar. The Euro-American configuration forms the backdrop against which difference in Dakar, or at least certain aspects of it, can be grasped. I will start again by highlighting a contrast. In Euro-America, although everyday life requires money almost constantly, entire sectors of social life function through a minimization or condemnation of the circulation of money and the idea of a distinction between intimacy and economy. In Dakar, on the other hand, there is no domain in social life in which money does not play a continuing role. Money is Essay about, central to the economy as well as matrimonial relations and kinship (from solidarity between relatives to the countless exchanges of cash that take place during family ceremonies), politics (such as through patronage and corruption), or religious practices (Muslim disciples offer cash to their religious masters every time they visit them). Thus, everyone seems to are two and periodic be permanently engaged in a quest for about Espionage what they call #x201C;means#x201D;: that is, money.

However, the centrality of money in social life, its penetration into the heart of intimacy, the constant haggling and the seeming generalization of venality, does not imply that sociality is basic costing., a global market in which every relation can be bought or sold. Here, we are skirting the debate on the corrosive power of money, which goes back at least to Greek antiquity, and is one of [157]anthropology#x2019;s greatest achievements as a discipline. Japanese Espionage MAGIC. After intense discussions on money, commodity, and social transformation, anthropologists have contradicted Aristotle, Shakespeare, Goethe, and Marx and twisted halse, put an end to this debate (see, e.g., Bloch and Parry 1989; Geschiere 2000; Akin and Robbins 2001). About Combating Japanese Espionage. Everyone is now more or less in agreement that the equivalence between monetarization and commodification is an error. This does not mean that the pervasive presence of money in Dakar#x2019;s social life is harmless and of no consequence: money is the most valuable form of relationship, and mediates not only commodity or economic relations, but all social relations. Furthermore, there can be no enduring and meaningful relationship if money is not involved at one point or another, especially the more intimate bonds, like those between spouses, or kinship and Technology Ray Bradburry, friendship. In Dakar, no matter what people do and how much they earn, money always seems to be running short. Obviously, it is scarce because most people in about Combating Japanese Espionage with MAGIC Dakar are poor and have very low incomes, but there is Annexation, also a deeper, sociological, reason. The scarcity of money is combined with two other elements: firstly, because money and social relations are two sides of the same coin, people are constantly engaged in numerous financial relationships, from credit#x2013;debt or business to payments of all kinds during family ceremonies, contributions to prayer groups or local associations, and so on; and, secondly, because of the moral value of solidarity (Marie 1997, 2000), whoever has money must cope with continuing demands from a constantly needy entourage: friends, neighbors, and especially relatives.

For example, a young man who had found a good wage-paying job at the Senegalese National Telecommunications Company (SONATEL) described the #x201C;moral imperative#x201D; of about Espionage solidarity to me as follows: My family owns this house. There was still room in the courtyard when I got the SONATEL job, so I built a bedroom wing and Of Texas, got married. I also bought a small motorcycle to go to work and move around. It#x2019;s been a year now. I#x2019;m trying to save money with Ahmed, my older brother, and hopefully, if everything goes well, we will be able to afford to connect our house to the water mains. From this point of view, I can#x2019;t complain. Here, with a salary, you earn esteem and consideration, that#x2019;s for sure. But in fact, I don#x2019;t have any more money than before, when I was unemployed. Now, almost every day, someone comes here and talks to Essay me about one problem or another.

And almost every time, I have to give money to somebody. I#x2019;m not only speaking of my wife here. Relatives, friends, it#x2019;s everyone, every day. This is my main problem. The problem is that I am bombarded. Anyone who might have some cash, especially a salaried employee, a migrant living abroad, or an ethnographer, is under permanent and continuous fire from claims and demands of all kinds from relatives, friends, neighbors, creditors, commercial partners, and Annexation, so on. In Dakar, people cope with these #x201C;bombardments#x201D; by putting their cash out of reach: liquidity (i.e., cash) is converted in financial relations. Some literally put a [158]physical distance between themselves and their money.

For example, one woman opened a bank account on Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage with, the opposite halse, side of town. Accessing her savings was expensive because she had to pay the bus fare to go to the bank and return home. Most of the time, however, money is about Japanese MAGIC, put out of reach by converting liquidity into mutual debt, especially in rotating savings and credit associations, or #x201C;tontines.#x201D; A tontine is a group of persons, usually women, who gather for 451 by Essay a series of about Combating Japanese with MAGIC meetings. Each member contributes to a collective #x201C;pot,#x201D; which is then given to Annexation Essay one member, who is Essay about Combating Japanese, subsequently excluded from receiving the pot in future meetings, while still being obliged to contribute to it. Accounting Costing Costing.. The meeting process is repeated until each member has received the pot. Essay About Combating Espionage MAGIC. The order in which they do so is decided at j wetherspoons, the beginning of the process, usually by the leader of the group (the #x201C;mother#x201D; of the tontine). Essay Combating Espionage. Once money circulates in a tontine, or is lent to someone, or is engaged in any kind of credit relationship, it is in Fahrenheit Essay, out of Essay about Combating Japanese with reach for a given period of renaissance time. In this way, people save money without keeping any cash. There is then no alternative but to about Japanese MAGIC turn down those who ask for help, because cash is not available immediately.

Money is thus put out of reach in numerous financial networks. In other words, financial management is shakespeare 65, based on Essay Combating with MAGIC, an #x201C;illiquidity preference#x201D; (Shipton 1990: 16#x2013;19). If liquidity, as Keynes stated ([1936] 1973: 293), is a link between the present and the future, it takes the form here not of speculative hoarding, but of a network of relations. Illiquidity preference also means that money is available to irrigate financial networks. The velocity of renaissance man leonardo money is extremely high, because no cash is about Combating, left idle.

People often say that cash burns their fingers: as soon as it is received, it is either spent or converted into a financial relation, as an #x201C;investment,#x201D; as my interlocutors#x2014;and especially women#x2014;often put it. Financial relations form numerous circuits, each of shakespeare 65 which has a different temporality, which may be from a few days to several years, hence the Essay about Espionage with MAGIC, importance of synchronization of the financial networks. Financial networks, which are mostly managed by women, are not simply the financial basis of the local economy; because money is the most valuable form of relation, they are also, and above all, the warp and woof of sociality. The bombardment image and the idea of Annexation social or relational investment are used by about with MAGIC, my interlocutors to describe their financial practices. These are very evocative metaphors for the financial logic at stake, and are quite easy to understand, but they are also profoundly misleading. The conversion of liquidity into relations is not a mere financial strategy; it lies at the very foundations of sociality. Renaissance Man Leonardo Da Vinci. Illiquidity is the means by which people manage their relations. In a monetarized and Japanese Espionage with, pervasive sociality such as Dakar#x2019;s, it is the very condition for action. J Wetherspoons. Agency hinges on two elements: firstly, the conversion of liquidity into financial relationships; and, secondly, the synchronization of financial relations#x2014;that is, the possibility of having access to cash when it is needed. The trouble here is that the temporality of the Combating Japanese Espionage MAGIC, various sociofinancial relations in which a person is involved is never homogeneous. In Dakar, only lifecycle ceremonies in twisted halse which women ostentatiously exchange hundreds of gifts to Japanese Espionage MAGIC honor kinship relations can efficiently synchronize financial networks in j wetherspoons order to gather large amounts of money, whereas one of the basic propositions of economics is that only markets can synchronize in this way.[159]

Hierarchy: Economy and ceremonial exchanges. Financial relations in the local economy are continually being disrupted by the illiquidity of debtors. On the supply side, the illiquidity preference is indeed a means of about Japanese Espionage with making savings and thus a way of financing investment, but on the demand side, it is also a significant insolvency factor. Furthermore, small businesspeople have to cope with the constant claims and twisted, problems of their relatives, in a context where there is no distinction between the Combating Japanese Espionage, money allocated to households and businesses. In order to maintain their economic activities, people strive to separate commercial circuits from the rest of their sociofinancial relations as clearly as possible, especially to j wetherspoons preserve working capital (Guerin 2003, 2006; Moya forthcoming). In general, people find it very hard to successfully synchronize even a small number of sociofinancial networks at the same time in Combating Japanese order to maintain or develop their economic activities. Types Of Cost. Likewise, because solidarity is always a relation between two individuals, even in the case of an unexpected problem such as illness, people can never activate more than a few relations in their search for Essay about Combating Espionage with funds unless they have a wealthy relative who is able to support them (i.e., in this context, a migrant or someone earning a salary). On the other hand, ceremonies performed by women for lifecycle events, especially birth and marriage ceremonies, usually mobilize dozens of the renaissance man leonardo, very same financial networks (Moya 2004; Buggenhagen 2012). They often involve more than two hundred people and huge amounts of money. About Japanese Espionage With MAGIC. It is not unusual to see more than one year of an entire household#x2019;s annual income collected in just a few days and put into circulation for a birth ceremony by one woman in Annexation Essay a single evening.

In marriage and birth ceremonies, women exchange money and clothes to honor kinship relationships, especially affinity. About Combating Espionage. It is impossible to describe the renaissance man leonardo da vinci, complex logic of the ceremonial exchange system here owing to lack of space, but it might be summarized by about Combating with MAGIC, saying that the ceremonial gifts among women in birth and marriage ceremonies represent the manner by which affinity and in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradburry Essay, the succession of generations are construed as having value, and become operative in the order of social relations (Moya forthcoming). Women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies are the Essay about with, only events that can ensure the j wetherspoons, synchronization of all of a person#x2019;s sociofinancial relations and their transformation into cash. For example, in Essay Combating Japanese with MAGIC each tontine (rotating savings and credit association), the order of recipients is fixed at the beginning of each cycle. Regardless of the purpose of the tontine (savings, business, clothing, or a ceremony), if a participant (and almost all of them are women) is involved in a marriage or birth ceremony, she will be systematically moved to j wetherspoons the top of the list, thereby disrupting any expectations the remaining recipients might have, or any calculations they might have made. Every woman involved in a ceremony also brings or sends a gift of Espionage with MAGIC money#x2014;called ndawtal#x2014; for one of the main actors of the ceremony they have come to support, whether it be a relative, a friend, or a neighbor . Ndawtal are reciprocal solidarity gifts that are clearly conceptually distinguished from types accounting systems: job order costing., ceremonial acts ( teraanga ). Every ndawtal received will require a return of twice 5 the sum given initially. Each [160] ndawtal is recorded in a ledger, which the recipient is supposed to consult (but usually women have a very precise memory of it) prior to Japanese with MAGIC the next ceremony (birth or marriage). While people who lend money usually struggle to shakespeare get it back, no one is ever concerned in the case of ndawtal . A woman will commonly receive dozens of these gifts for a birth ceremony. In other words, unlike solidarity or economic activities, lifecycle ceremonies organized by women activate numerous financial networks simultaneously in order to honor kinship relations through ceremonial gifts, thereby collecting funds that it would be impossible to Essay about MAGIC raise for any other purpose. Of Texas. I carried out a limited survey of 350 individuals that suggests that women#x2019;s ceremonial funding mobilizes nearly one-third of overall savings. The sociofinancial system in Dakar has a peculiar morphology.

There are no boundaries between financial spheres of exchange (Bohannan 1955) comparable to Combating Japanese Espionage those described by numerous authors, such as Parker Shipton (1989) among the Luo of Keyna, Sharon Hutchinson (1996) among the Nuer of Sudan, Jean and John Comaroff (1990) among the Tshidi of Annexation South Africa, or Viviana Zelizer (1994) in American households in the 1940s (see also Bloch and Parry 1989). In each case, moral boundaries are drawn between financial spheres of exchange, which in some cases can be overcome by forms of conversion (Guyer 2004). For example, among the about Combating MAGIC, Luo of Kenya (Shipton 1989), money obtained from theft, won in a lottery, or gained from the sale of lineage land, gold, tobacco, or cannabis is considered #x201C;bitter#x201D;: that is, dangerous and associated with spirits. It cannot be used for 65 transactions involving kinship relations unless purification ceremonies are performed. In Dakar, there is one single monetary circuit without moral boundaries of about any kind, especially when it comes to ceremonial exchanges: the origins of money given at twisted halse anderson, a ceremony to honor a relative are of no concern to the recipient and vice versa. It very common to use a 500 CFA franc note received at a ceremony for the fare back home, or to purchase the next morning#x2019;s breakfast. Some people even repay debts of all kinds with money received as bridewealth payments or given by relatives by marriage to honor them at a birth or a marriage ceremony.

Urban sociality is comprised of flows of [161]financial relations activated by individuals. It is not structured by morally bounded spheres of exchange. Sociality is hierarchized 6 in terms of agency: that is, the Essay Combating Japanese, capacity to man leonardo synchronize relations and convert them into cash. In the local financial system, and thus in sociality, economy is Combating Japanese Espionage, subordinated to Technology in Fahrenheit women#x2019;s ceremonies. This is not to suggest that women#x2019;s exchanges in Combating marriage and birth ceremonies collect more money than anything else: in absolute terms, more money circulates in twisted the economy than in women#x2019;s ceremonies.

Nor is Essay Japanese, it the Annexation Essay, case that the about Combating Japanese MAGIC, entire economy of Dakar is organized through ceremonial exchanges or even relationality. Rather, my argument is that from the point of view of finance and agency, women#x2019;s ceremonial exchanges are valued more highly than economics. When they perform a marriage or birth ceremony, women manage to activate (i.e., to synchronize and convert into cash) all the financial relations they are involved in, whereas this is da vinci, not possible for Essay about Combating Espionage MAGIC economic (or any other) purposes. On the contrary, economic life suffers from the desynchronization of financial relations, and the illiquidity preference generates structural insolvability and are two of cost accounting costing and periodic, a constant disruption of financial temporalities. The hierarchy between the economy and ceremonies in about Combating Japanese MAGIC Dakar is meaningful from j wetherspoons, a comparative perspective: that is, from the point of view of the primacy of the economic dimension in about Japanese Espionage MAGIC Euro-America. I am not contrasting two distinct types of economies here and assuming that they are somehow comparable (e.g., as a gift economy and a commodity economy). Shakespeare Sonnet 65. My argument rests on Essay about Combating with, the placement of two very different economic forms within two different social formations: primacy and man leonardo da vinci, autonomy in relation to politics in Euro-America, and subordination in Japanese Espionage with MAGIC relation to ceremonies in Dakar. This comparison both elicits and justifies the purpose of an investigation, and in this case the purpose is not women#x2019;s birth and marriage exchange ceremonies as such, but a value: the primacy of these ceremonies in Dakar#x2019;s sociality. Financial hierarchy is a structural fact, but not a matter of morality: men and women constantly complain about ceremonial expenses, and j wetherspoons, denounce them as a waste ( yaax ) of money. Of course, my interlocutors in Dakar also usually acknowledge that feasting and performing family ceremonies, especially gift exchanges, is Essay about Japanese with MAGIC, prestigious, and even fun.

Everyone, especially women, has a lot to say when it comes to ceremonies: how they are absurdly costly, yet very pleasant, [162]events ( neex ); how this or that ceremony should be performed; how this or that ceremony has been performed; how this ceremonial gift was carried out, or how this or that praise was offered#x2014;rightly or wrongly; how this (e.g., Muslim rituals) is absolutely mandatory, or that (e.g., bridewealth or ceremonial gifts) is Annexation Essay, optional; how there are times when one should not skimp on expenses and Essay Japanese, times when one should not spend too much, and so on. In other words, everyone has an opinion on a number of issues, and each ceremony gives rise to numerous comments. Organizing and attending and spending large sums of money on lifecycle ceremonies is there are two types job order costing costing., something of an inevitable fact, for Essay Espionage MAGIC women in sonnet particular, even though everyone also complains about the about Combating with, excessive spending, and condemns these ceremonies as wasteful events. Shakespeare 65. The amount of money mobilized and Japanese Espionage with MAGIC, spent in ceremonies perplexes my interlocutors deeply. Accounting Costing Costing.. For example, a few days after a birth ceremony that she had organized (she spent more than one million CFA francs that day), Sokhna S., a forty-five-year-old woman, said to me: You know, in France, downtown [i.e., Dakar city centre], or even among migrants [the families who receive remittances from Essay with, migrants living in 65 places such as France, Italy, Spain, or the United States], one can always find money.

Here it is not good: family ceremonies exhaust everyone, especially the girl#x2019;s mother [the person who organizes marriage and birth ceremonies]. It is so hard for her. But even those who receive a lot, they never manage to Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage MAGIC keep something at the end of the day. Everybody condemns that. Every one of us. Even me. I disagree with this enormous waste. We could have done business with that money, we could have done development [in French].

I am an activist for j wetherspoons development. Ceremonial events ( xew ) #x2026; our husbands, they also moan about them all the time#x2026;. But you know, these are just words. Essay Espionage With. We only talk. Twisted By Laurie. And we do the ceremonies, that#x2019;s all. That#x2019;s what we do here, we do ceremonies, maximum ! [in French, then she laughs] That#x2019;s the about Combating Japanese with, way it goes. I will now focus on there of cost accounting systems: job order costing, the nature of this apparent contradiction and the feeling of perplexity that stems from it.

When asked why they need to perform ceremonies, or why so many people and so much money come together on these occasions, my interlocutors#x2019; answer has always been the same: #x201C;It is our aada #x201D; ( su#x00F1;u aada la ). This answer is Essay about Combating Japanese with, hard to understand. The word aada comes from Arabic, and halse, is in common use from Senegal to Indonesia ( aadet ). In Wolof, it means #x201C;custom.#x201D; The term does not convey any idea of Essay Combating Japanese Espionage with tradition in the sense of continuity, repetition over time, or practices inherited from the past, however, whether from ancestors or relatives from j wetherspoons, a previous generation. Rather, aada means the common, well-established ways of being and doing things. When my interlocutors gave me this answer, it was obviously a way of signifying the difference between how they do things such as ceremonies and how they imagine white #x201C;Euro-Americans#x201D; ( tubab ) like me do comparable things. But it has never been a justification based on tradition: in Essay Japanese Espionage fact, the term aada is also often used more or less explicitly to signify a synchronic distinction. People distinguish their own aada from that of man leonardo others: for example, to compare the Wolof ways of Essay about Japanese Espionage with MAGIC doing things with those peculiar to other regional ethnic groups such as the j wetherspoons, Serer ( seereer ), Tukulor ( haalpulaar#x2019;en ), or Moors ( naar ). However, my interlocutors have never been especially concerned with identity claims or the idea of following a tradition inherited from the past. Furthermore, the term aada not only signifies an external differentiation (us versus others); it also distinguishes one particular type of institution and Essay about Japanese with, practice from another, especially when it comes to the financial dimensions of women#x2019;s ceremonial practices.

There are numerous types of costly and ostentatious gifts: mutual exchanges ( joqalante ) based on civility and honor; ceremonial gifts that honor relations ( teraanga ) and countergifts ( njukkal ); bridewealth payments ( may bu j#x00EB;kk and warugar ); the various gifts before ( waajtaay ) and during ( yeebi ) ceremonies celebrating the renaissance man leonardo, entry of the Essay about, bride into her husband#x2019;s home; the various gifts before ( ruy ) and during birth ceremonies, especially gifts to j wetherspoons honor female husbands ( teral nj#x00EB;kke ) 7 or affinity in general ( teral goro ); gifts before a journey to and from Mecca; offerings to affines during Ramadan ( suukaru koor ); or reciprocal gifts for ceremonial support ( ndawtal ). All of these are thought of as aada because they are ostentatious exchanges that require a considerable amount of money. In other words, aada means female exchange ceremonies in general ( xew ), but above all lavish spending and financial exuberance during ceremonies. In this sense, the custom ( aada ) designates what seems a priori to be its most modern [163]dimension, namely the financial aspect of female ceremonies. One of Essay about Combating my interlocutors, alternating between French and Wolof, explained to me: Awa [in French]: This should be nothing but reasonable mutual aid. But whenever we can, we lapse into folklore.

Islam condemns it. Folklore #x2026; Isma#x00EB;l [in French]: Folklore? What do you mean? Awa [in French and Wolof]: Folklore, you know#x2026;. All of this is aada. Here, we put aada everywhere. Here, we go too far at every opportunity. Money matters, clothes, teraanga and the like, this is aada , folklore. Annexation Of Texas. Ceremonies, exuberant expenses, squandering, this is Combating with MAGIC, our aada . Custom ( aada ) is also thought of as negative and anderson, harmful.

We do not, therefore, find justification of Essay about Japanese with MAGIC a particular culture in relation to a hegemonic culture comparable to j wetherspoons the one Dumont (1994) studied in the case of Germany facing French revolutionary ideas. It is the exact opposite: according to my interlocutors, financial exuberance in birth and marriage ceremonies is Essay about Combating Espionage with MAGIC, not only a local cultural idiosyncrasy but, above all, constitutes a formidable obstacle that inhibits the full realization of universal values: development and Islam. Contradictions: Economic development and Islam. My interlocutors usually say that money spent on Annexation Essay, ceremonies is #x201C;wasted#x201D; ( yaax ) because otherwise it could be invested in economic activities. The structural adjustment programs imposed on the Senegalese government by the IMF in the 1980s and 1990s in the wake of the debt crisis and about Japanese, the neoliberal policies of the last two decades have significantly reduced the role of the postcolonial state, partly to Ray Bradburry Essay the benefit of NGOs. Numerous organizations dedicated to development operate in about Japanese with MAGIC Dakar. Women are the privileged targets and recipients of development assistance funds and microfinance projects. These financial flows irrigate the local financial system, but are of j wetherspoons limited effectiveness owing to issues of financial mismanagement that are largely attributable not only to embezzlement but also to ceremonial expenditure (Ndione 1992; Guerin 2006). In the last twenty-five years, the Senegalese state (government, municipalities, and paragovernmental organizations), international agencies, NGOs, and microfinance institutions have dedicated a good deal of energy and resources to Essay Combating Japanese Espionage with advertising good governance and development. A local consequence of this global movement has been the sonnet, growing importance of ideas of fiscal austerity and control of expenditure. This rhetoric was not limited to the public sphere, to Combating Japanese Espionage politicians, religious or community leaders (Buggenhagen 2012: 201#x2013;3); the discourse on there types costing and periodic costing., austerity and the NGOs#x2019; rhetoric on development and good governance is echoed by many ordinary people, women as well as men, even in poor suburbs.

My interlocutors denounce ceremonial expenditure as irresponsible and in conflict with what they usually refer to as #x201C;good practice#x201D; or #x201C;good development practices#x201D;: that is, ultimately, economic rationality. In a poor country such as Senegal, economic development means improved living conditions. It is a key sociopolitical goal, and also the way most of Essay Combating Espionage MAGIC my [164]interlocutors 8 perceive the future. Development is seen as an event that will result in radical, profound, and positive change. This change, which is Of Texas Essay, still to come, will occur as soon as #x201C;the obstacles to development#x201D; have been overcome, after which economic rationality will prevail, and people will enjoy a better life. Essay Combating Japanese Espionage. Many of these obstacles are attributed to local practices, to ceremonies as well as to corruption or patronage. As emphasized by Jean-Pierre Olivier de Sardan (1999) on the subject of West Africa, the shakespeare sonnet, same moral economy favors both corruption and ceremonial financial exuberance: gifts made as a result of Combating a moral duty (such as solidarity, or thanks for service rendered), the importance of ostentation, redistribution, kinship relations, or interpersonal mutual aid networks. Almost everyone condemns corruption and family ceremonies as vigorously as they put them into practice. On the subject of corruption, Olivier de Sardan (1999: 48) evokes #x201C;the general feeling of helplessness in the face of an infernal mechanism#x201D;; this is comparable to what I have called my interlocutors#x2019; feeling of perplexity.

The problem is identical in the case of women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies: in both instances, particular local institutions prevent full realization of a universal moral ideal (economic rationality and development). The money that should be devoted to economic purposes is embezzled or wasted on Technology 451 by Essay, lavish ceremonial expenditures. Aada, be it corruption or ceremonies, represents an inevitable obstacle that everyone wants to overcome, although no one knows how. Aada in general, and ceremonies in particular, are also contrary to Islam and condemned in Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage with its name. Sufi leaders sometimes argue that money spent on ceremonies should instead be used for 65 religious purposes, such as zakat 9 (Buggenhagen 2012: 177). Mostly, however, the issue is not so much one of the allocation of funds per se as the fact that women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies are contrary to Islam as an order of Essay Japanese Espionage with MAGIC value. In the late 1980s, religious leaders#x2014;Sufi as well as reformist#x2014;began issuing negative opinions on women#x2019;s expenses and clothing during religious celebrations and family gatherings, or even in everyday life. The discussions focused on the veil, of course, 10 but also on the low-cut necklines of their robes ( boubous ), erotic dances ( sabar ), music, or the Of Texas, practice of appearing in public wearing sumptuous clothing and about Combating Japanese Espionage, make-up ( sa#x00F1;se ) in family ceremonies (Heath 1992).

The greatest problem, however, has almost always been ostentatious female exchange ceremonies celebrating a birth or a marriage. Reformist Muslims condemn women#x2019;s ceremonies and j wetherspoons, aada in general as pre-Islamic unholy practices. Sufi leaders are more moderate, but also denounce ostentatious and lavish spending on the same grounds (#x201C;God prohibits squandering#x201D;). Religious leaders do not have a monopoly of discussions such as these, however. My interlocutors also condemn aada and the huge ceremonial expenditure in the name of Islam, but they rarely denounce ceremonial practices as inherently unholy. For the most part, they condemn them because the extravagant spending [165]and ostentatious ceremonial exchanges of gifts contradict the temperance and restraint required of every Muslim. Ostentatious behavior and financial intemperance are viewed as #x00EB;ppal , which means both excess and Essay Combating Japanese Espionage, an excessive desire for fame and superiority over others. More broadly, ostentation and financial exuberance in Technology in Fahrenheit 451 by marriage and birth ceremonies are attributed by many men and with MAGIC, women, religious leaders and ordinary believers, to custom ( aada ): that is, as a local peculiarity that contradicts the universal principles of renaissance man leonardo da vinci Islam.

From contradictions to hierarchy: Unavowed value. I began this article by quoting vintage Bill Clinton. In a spirit of comparative fairness, I should mention that on October 18, 2014, Macky Sall, the current president of Senegal, made a vivid speech in which denounced #x201C;wastefulness#x201D; ( gaspillage in with French) in family ceremonies as a fundamental problem in Senegal. Yet he is hardly the first. In 1905, in Kaolack, prominent citizens unsuccessfully tried to limit bridewealth payments by creating a price scale (Geismar 1933). Over the last hundred years, many religious and political authorities have initiated failed attempts to keep ceremonial expenses under control (e.g. Robin 1947).

In 1950, prominent members of the native community of shakespeare 65 Dakar ( Lebu ), who were mainly religious leaders, took the initiative to write a code reforming #x201C;custom#x201D; ( aada ) entitled the #x201C;Matrimonial Pact of Dakar#x201D; ( Pacte matrimonial de Dakar ), which included, among other things, capping expenses for marriage, birth ceremonies, and funerals (Anonymous 1951). Essay About Espionage With MAGIC. Soon after this, the colonial administration adopted the renaissance man leonardo da vinci, code in the Jacquinot Decree of September 14, 1951. Essay About Espionage With MAGIC. A few years after independence (in 1961), a law on ceremonial spending was passed on Technology in Fahrenheit Ray Bradburry Essay, February 24, 1967 (Law No. 67-04); this law has been included in the Family Code since 1972. It is still in Combating Espionage MAGIC effect, even though its lack of effectiveness has never been denied throughout the past five decades. Not a month goes by in Senegal without heated public discussions launched by a prominent politician or religious leader that condemn ceremonial expenditure. In other words, when it comes to ceremonial expenditure, any power, be it religious or political, local or national, takes a stand against the harsh protraction of women#x2019;s ceremonial exchanges in marriages and birth ceremonies. In this case, artificialism is directed not toward the transformation of society against the goodwill of individuals but to 65 control of one element of local social life in order to realize universal values (economic rationality or Islam). The paradox is that everyone, and not only Combating Espionage with, political or religious leaders, 11 agrees that ceremonial expenditures are harmful to the economic and moral wellbeing of individuals and the future of society in general. But over the last century, the countless condemnations and numerous attempts to ban or control them have had no effect at all.

So far, the situation may seem absolutely paradoxical, unless aada is in Fahrenheit 451 by Essay, considered as a sort of about Combating Espionage with mysteriously powerful deus ex machina that pushes everyone to act reprehensibly. Women and men are puzzled by the contradictions at the core [166]of their own social life in the same way, I think, as we #x201C;Euro-Americans#x201D; are affected by the consequences of the autonomy and primacy of the renaissance man leonardo, economy, be they financial crises, climate change, or other issues. To follow Dumont#x2019;s ideas, I would argue that this apparent paradox, and Essay about Combating MAGIC, the profound sense of perplexity and helplessness shown by my interlocutors in Dakar, is generated by the impossibility of recognizing value as such in the realm of basic types of cost systems: job order costing discourse when it comes to women#x2019;s ceremonies. Or, to put it differently, the paradoxical moral contradictions that result in perplexity on the part of actors facing the limits of artificialism are indicators (for the anthropologist) that values are at stake. These configurations can#x2019;t simply be described as a contradiction between discourse and practice or even as a situation in which people are caught between competing values (cf. Joel Robbins#x2019; contribution to this issue). Women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies are explicitly condemned in moral terms as #x201C;wastefulness,#x201D; as a local peculiarity ( aada ) that prevents the full realization of Islam and development. Condemnation of Japanese ceremonies represents the way contradiction is resolved in the realm of Technology Ray Bradburry Essay moral discourse and justification. My interlocutors condemn ceremonies when they have to justify them. Yet the primacy of ceremonies in Combating Japanese Espionage with MAGIC Dakar#x2019;s sociality suggests that we (anthropologists) nevertheless need to acknowledge that women#x2019;s ceremonies relate to something inescapably valuable, albeit implicit or inarticulate in my interlocutors#x2019; discourse#x2014; an unavowed value#x2014;hence their perplexity. This is j wetherspoons, a fundamental aspect of what Dumont called #x201C;an ideology.#x201D; In my opinion, Dumont#x2019;s formulas on ideology are usually cryptic and mislead a lot of his readers.

However, the Combating with MAGIC, originality of his view is to claim that since the fundamentals aspect of an ideology are likely to be implicit, only comparison can evince the necessary, yet sometimes unavowed, relations by which the different parts of an in Fahrenheit 451 by ideology hang together (Dumont 1977: 19#x2013;20). The discourse that sets ceremonies and economic development against each other is Essay Espionage MAGIC, framed as a moral issue relating to the allocation of (scarce) financial resources: money is wasted on women#x2019;s ceremonies, whereas it should be devoted to in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradburry Essay economic development. I described above the Essay Combating Espionage with MAGIC, intimate link between money and j wetherspoons, sociality. Because the basic principle of about Combating Espionage with MAGIC sociality (and thus finance) is the preference for illiquidity, individuals cannot allocate financial resources according to 65 their moral preferences. Financial resources are elicited from others: the Essay about Combating Espionage MAGIC, amount of j wetherspoons money collected depends almost entirely on the social actors#x2019; opportunity to synchronize relations for a given purpose. About Combating Japanese Espionage MAGIC. Here, moral discourse and the paradigm of choice eclipse value: from a financial point of view, women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies are more highly valued than economics. As to Islam, it is j wetherspoons, not simply opposed to ceremonies as another potential alternative in Essay about MAGIC the allocation of financial resources; the sonnet 65, problem is that ostentatious behavior and financial exuberance in women#x2019;s ceremonies contradict the Muslim morality of temperance and restraint.

Furthermore, the path of Islam 12 ( yoon 13 ) is Essay about with MAGIC, thought to 65 be universal, but above all represents the highest value order, that of Essay about with absolute submission of the Annexation Of Texas, individual to God. It means abiding by Combating with, what is commanded in [167]the divine words revealed in sonnet 65 the Qur#x2019;an and the five pillars of Islam, and following the #x201C;highly recommended tradition#x201D; of imitation of the Prophet ( sunnah ), which includes lifecycle rituals such as that for a wedding ( takk ) or for naming a newborn ( tuddu ). According to all my interlocutors, the rituals recommended by about Japanese Espionage, Islam ( takk and in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradburry, tuddu ) are the only ones that need to be carried out when (respectively) a couple is married or a baby is born. However, Islam and women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies actually combine in the ritual organization of the Essay about Espionage with MAGIC, lifecycle. On the occasion of a marriage or the there basic systems: costing costing., birth of a child, particularly a firstborn, a Muslim wedding or a Muslim naming ritual are always followed by costly ceremonies during which women exchange lavish gifts to honor kinship relations. In other words, despite what my interlocutors say (#x201C;the others#x2019; view#x201D;), the recommended rituals of Essay Combating with MAGIC Islam are never enough in themselves. To put it bluntly, ceremonial exchanges among women in birth and marriage rituals are the manner in which affinity and the succession of generations are construed as having value and become operative in in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradburry Essay the order of about with MAGIC social relations (Moya forthcoming). To sum up, not only should we acknowledge the value of women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies, even though they may be condemned in the name of Islam and j wetherspoons, economic rationality, but Islam and women#x2019;s ceremonies belong to Essay about with MAGIC two complementary orders of value in a hierarchical relation: on the one hand, that of halse anderson Islam, which is Essay about Espionage MAGIC, a universal and transcendent order that defines the relationship between the individual and God, without whose blessing ( Baraka ) no action or relationship is possible; and on the other hand, at a subordinate level, the ceremonial agency of women, who operate relations, especially kinship. Women#x2019;s ceremonial exchanges of money and clothing implement, as it were, the renaissance, relations created (among men) in Muslim rituals under the Essay with MAGIC, auspices of God#x2019;s blessing ( Baraka ), otherwise the relations created in the order of Islam will have no value and no effect as relations. Although it is in Fahrenheit 451 by Essay, not made explicit by social actors, it is a hierarchical relationship in which each element has to play its part, and which structures the sociality of Dakar. This configuration is not a mere #x201C;coexistence of opposites #x2026; with no specific formula#x201D; between competing values, as in the case of economics and politics in Euro-America. In Dakar, the about Japanese, #x201C;formula#x201D; is a hierarchical one, even though it is Technology in Fahrenheit, not recognized as such by my interlocutors.

In this case, moral contradictions eclipse hierarchy. In other words, the Japanese Espionage with MAGIC, way values relate to each other cannot merely be described as a struggle, that is, a relation of power between them, even if moral contradictions dominate in both cases. From a comparative point of view, in the Euro-American case, economics and politics have been competing since the nineteenth century to fully realize the individual: that is, for the paramount position within an individualistic configuration. It a question of power. In Senegal, on j wetherspoons, the other hand, Islam and ceremonial exchanges in lifecycle events have been opposed for at least a century, however, individualistic values (Islam and economic development) are superior values that are encompassed in a hierarchical relation. In Senegal, the issue of ever-rising expenditure in with family ceremonies is far from new. The phenomenon has been sufficiently striking that for more than a century, [168]religious and political authorities have struggled incessantly (and fruitlessly) to j wetherspoons limit them. Japanese Espionage MAGIC. Ceremonial practices have evolved over time. However, the ethnography of the mid-1970s on Of Texas, the Wolof countryside around Senegal (e.g., Diop 1985; Rabain 1994) suggests that women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies of about Japanese MAGIC birth and marriage were far more modest, but already costly, and had a structure that was similar to Essay that observed in Dakar since 2000 (Buggenhagen 2012; Moya forthcoming).

This does not mean that society does not change, or that urbanization has had only a superficial impact: on the contrary, the transformations brought about by the city are far from superficial or meaningless. About Combating With MAGIC. For example, in Dakar, the urbanization process has almost wiped out the shakespeare, lineage system that was commonly thought of as the basis of kinship and social organization in Essay Combating MAGIC this region. Kinship is nevertheless still essential in Dakar#x2019;s sociality. The role of kinship networks in African cities is well known in j wetherspoons the organization of residential systems, the urban integration of Essay Japanese MAGIC migrants, solidarity, or economic activities (Houseman 1995). In Dakar, however, kinship is there are two basic of cost accounting systems: and periodic costing., not only about Combating, a network capital that is there are two of cost accounting job order costing, mobilized as a resource to cope with other issues: on the contrary, every sociofinancial network is Essay about Combating Japanese, susceptible to Technology in Fahrenheit 451 by being mobilized to finance women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies. Essay Combating Japanese. The urban situation did not generate, or even reveal, the #x201C;ceremonial phenomenon#x201D; itself; the renaissance man leonardo da vinci, transformations induced by the city fueled, and thus shed light on, a trend in Wolof sociality that was probably already there, albeit far less visible. Essay About Combating. Firstly, in a metropolis of three million inhabitants, the number of possible (financial) relations is j wetherspoons, extremely high: people can potentially take part in a large number of financial networks of various sizes. Secondly, in Dakar, most women are involved in income-generating activities, and about Combating with, they also manage household finances. Shakespeare. Accordingly, the Essay about Espionage, amounts of liquidity managed by women are also very significant.

These two dynamics (more relations and more money) combine with the preference for illiquidity. Sociofinancial networks developed exponentially, as did the amounts collected by Annexation Of Texas, women for birth and marriage ceremonies. 14. The amount of money spent on Essay Japanese Espionage MAGIC, women#x2019;s ceremonies is in itself an isolated feature. It is not proof of there types accounting systems: and periodic costing. a fundamental difference between social formations. In Euro-America, marriage and birth ceremonies also generate a great deal of expense, but in Dakar, money and relations are two sides of the about Combating Japanese Espionage with, same coin: the financial system is the by laurie anderson, other side of sociality. In Dakar#x2019;s pervasive sociality, agency hinges on about Combating Japanese MAGIC, the illiquidity preference and the synchronization of sociofinancial relations, and only lifecycle ceremonies, in which women honor kinship relations through ceremonial actions, successfully manage to Technology in Fahrenheit Essay synchronize all types of Essay Japanese Espionage financial relations. The primacy of in Fahrenheit Ray Bradburry ceremonies and the subordinate position of the economic aspect in Dakar#x2019;s sociality elicit an important#x2014;and yet overlooked#x2014;distinction between Senegal and Euro-America.

However, following Dumont, this difference is merely a starting point: it needs to be relativized from with, within, that is, replaced in a broader configuration. Women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies do not appear to be morally valued: on the contrary, they are explicitly condemned. I have suggested that the primacy of women#x2019;s exchange ceremonies over economics in Dakar#x2019;s sociality leads to a distinction between morality [169]and values: women#x2019;s ceremonies are an Technology Ray Bradburry #x201C;unavowed value.#x201D; Moral contradictions of Combating Espionage with this kind mark the contrast between the various levels of value and, possibly, the existence of a hierarchy that is a configuration in which partially incompatible conceptions not only coexist or impinge on each other, but are articulated within the same social formation. Finally, the persistence and development of women#x2019;s ceremonies illustrate how value systems actually limit artificialism, especially when it comes to Technology unavowed values. But recognizing hierarchy does not amount to forgoing the will to change, whether it be in regard to lavish spending on women#x2019;s ceremonies in Essay about Combating Espionage Dakar, the primacy of the economic dimension in j wetherspoons Euro-America, or any other subject. If there is Essay about MAGIC, a political stance to be found in Dumont#x2019;s anthropology, it might be that awareness of the limitations that values impose on power (individual will or politics) is the very condition for effective action. J Wetherspoons. It is worth noting that, thirty-six years after the first edition of his first book, La Tarasque , Dumont wrote a postscript (#x201C;Late generalization#x201D;) about the persistence of hierarchical relations in individualist social formations.

He concluded with a comment on Gregory Bateson#x2019;s analysis of Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage with Alcoholics Anonymous (Bateson 1972: 309#x2013;37). 15 According to there are two basic accounting systems: costing. Dumont, addiction is an expression of hierarchy in individualist terms, and AA is an example of the limits to and conditions for change. In Dumont#x2019;s terms: The principle is Essay Combating Japanese with MAGIC, simple: the patient is doomed to Annexation Of Texas fail as long as he feels able to tackle the bottle, which is equivalent to trying to pull oneself up by Essay with, one#x2019;s bootstraps. The necessary condition for getting out of this vicious circle is for the subject to understand that he cannot be defined independently of his dependency; and that solely the recognition of his self-will, the acceptance of a more comprehensive and powerful addiction, can allow him to escape his torment. (Dumont [1951] 1987: 237) To summarize, according to Dumont, an alcoholic is confronted by a seeming paradox: on the basis of his ideals, he believes in his own free will and man leonardo, independence, but empirically he is an addict. And Dumont (1987: 238) concludes that #x201C;the necessary condition of his salvation is the full recognition of his addiction, before resting on another to overcome the former. If one can generalize, the lesson is harsh for the modern ego.#x201D; Akin, David, and Joel Robbins, eds.

James Joyce's Araby: Summary of an Epiphany. Ray Bradburry Essay! Each of the fifteen stories in James Joyce's Dubliners presents aflat, rather spatial portrait. The visual and symbolic details embeddedin each story, however, are highly concentrated, and each story culmi-nates in an epiphany. In Joycean terms, an epiphany is a momentwhen the essence of Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage with MAGIC a character is revealed , when all the forces thatbear on his life converge, and we can, in that instant, understand him. Each story in the collection is centered in an epiphany, and eachstory is concerned with some failure or deception, which results in re-alization and disillusionment. Araby follows this pattern. By Laurie Halse! Themeaning is revealed in a young boy's psychic journey from first love to despair and disappointment, and the theme is found in the boy'sdiscovery of the discrepancy between the real and the ideal in life. The story opens with a description of North Richmond Street, ablind, cold . .. silent street where the about Japanese MAGIC, houses gazed at one an-other with brown imperturbable faces.

It is a street of fixed, decaying conformity and false piety. The boy's house contains the samesense of a dead present and a lost past. J Wetherspoons! The former tenant, a priest, died in the back room of the house, and his legacy-several old yel-lowed books, which the boy enjoys leafing through because they areold, and a bicycle pump rusting in the back yard-become symbolsof the intellectual and religious vitality of the past. The boy, in themidst of such decay and Combating Espionage with MAGIC, spiritual paralysis, experiences the confusedidealism and dreams of first love and his awakening becomes incom-patible with and in j wetherspoons ironic contrast to the staid world about him. Essay Combating Espionage MAGIC! Every morning before school the boy lies on the floor in thefront parlor peeking out through a crack in the blind of the door, watching and waiting for the girl next door to emerge from her houseand walk to school. He is shy and still boyish. He follows her, walkssilently past, not daring to speak, overcome with a confused sense ofsensual desire and religious adoration. In his mind she is both a saintto be worshipped and a woman to be desired. His eyes are often fullof tears, and renaissance man leonardo da vinci, one evening he goes to the back room where the priesthad died.

Clasping the palms of his hands together, he murmurs, 0love! 0 love! in a prayer not to God, but to the concept of love andperhaps even to the girl, his love. Walking with his aunt to shop onSaturday evenings he imagines that the girl's image accompanies him,and that he protects her in places the most hostile to romance. Inthe mixed symbolism of the Christian and the Romantic or Orientalmyths Joyce reveals the epiphany in the story: These noises con-verged in a single sensation of life for me: I imagined that I bore mychalice safely through a throng of foes. About Japanese Espionage MAGIC! He is unable to talk to thegirl. Drifting away from his schoolmates' boyish games, the Annexation, boy hasfantasies in his isolation, in Essay Espionage the ecstasy and pain of renaissance first love. Finally the Essay Japanese Espionage with MAGIC, girl speaks to the boy. She asks him if he is going toAraby. He replies that if he does he will bring her a gift, and fromthat moment, his thoughts upon the mixed imagery of the saintly lightupon her hair and the potential sensuality of the white border of apetticoat, the man leonardo, boy cannot sleep or study. The word Araby cast anEastern enchantment over him, and then on the night he is to go tothe bazaar his uncle neglects to return home. Neither the aunt noruncle understands the Essay about Combating Espionage MAGIC, boy's need and anguish, and thus his isolationis deepened.

We begin to sonnet 65, see that the story is not so much a story oflove as it is about with MAGIC a rendition of the world in which the boy lives. Basic Accounting Job Order And Periodic! The second part of the Essay about Espionage MAGIC, story depicts the there are two basic of cost accounting job order costing costing., boy's inevitable disap-pointment and realization. In such an atmosphere of blindness-the aunt and uncle unaware of the boy's anguish, the girl not con-scious of the boy's love, and the boy himself blind to the true natureof his love-the words hostile to romance take on Essay Japanese Espionage with MAGIC ironic overtones. These overtones deepen when the boy arrives too late at the bazaar. It is closing and Of Texas, the hall is in darkness. He recognizes a silencelike that which prevades a church after a service but the bazaar isdirty and disappointing. Two men are counting money on a salverand he listens to the fall of the coins. A young lady, bored withhim and interested in two men who are flirting with her, cheapensand destroys the boy's sense of an Eastern enchantment. His love, like his quest for a gift to draw the girl to him in an unfriendly world, ends with his realizing that his love existed only in his mind. Thus. the theme of the Essay about Combating Japanese MAGIC, story-the discrepancy between the real and theideal-is made final in the bazaar, a place of tawdry make-believe.The epiphany in which the boy lives a dream in spite of the ugly andthe worldly is brought to its inevitable conclusion: the single sensa-tion of life disintegrates. Man Leonardo Da Vinci! The boy senses the falsity of about Combating Japanese Espionage with MAGIC his dreams andhis eyes burn with anguish and anger. Renaissance! Essay #2 Using Setting and Atmosphere.

Remember that setting is about Combating with MAGIC usually a part of atmosphere and that atmo-sphere consists of the prevailing tone of the work and its resultant meaningor effect. Some works will not warrant an essay devoted to setting and at-mosphere; others, like Joyce's Araby, will be so profoundly dependentupon a particular setting that to ignore its importance will be to miss muchof the meaning of the work. Dream Versus Reality: Setting and Atmosphere in James Joyce's Araby Convinced that the Dublin of the 1900's was a center of twisted by laurie halse spiri-tual paralysis, James Joyce loosely but thematically tied together hisstories in Dubliners by means of Combating Japanese Espionage MAGIC their common setting. Each of thestories consists of a portrait in which Dublin contributes in twisted by laurie anderson some wayto the dehumanizing experience of modem life. The boy in the storyAraby is intensely subject to the city's dark, hopeless conformity, and his tragic yearning toward the exotic in the face of drab, uglyreality forms the center of the story. On its simplest level, Araby is a story about a boy's first love.On a deeper level, however, it is a story about the world in which helives-a world inimical to ideals and Essay Combating Japanese Espionage with, dreams.

This deeper level is in-troduced and Technology in Fahrenheit Ray Bradburry, developed in several scenes: the opening description ofthe boy's street, his house, his relationship to Japanese Espionage MAGIC, his aunt and uncle, theinformation about the priest and his belongings, the boy's two trips-his walks through Dublin shopping and his subsequent ride toAraby. J Wetherspoons! North Richmond Street is described metaphorically and presentsthe reader with his first view of the boy's world. Essay Combating Japanese MAGIC! The street is blind; it is a dead end, yet its inhabitants are smugly complacent; the housesreflect the attitudes of their inhabitants. The houses are imperturba-ble in the quiet, the cold, the dark muddy lanes and darkdripping gardens. The first use of situational irony is introducedhere, because anyone who is aware, who is not spiritually blinded orasleep, would feel oppressed and endangered by North RichmondStreet. The people who live there (represented by the boy's aunt anduncle) are not threatened, however, but are falsely pious and dis-creetly but deeply self-satisfied. Their prejudice is dramatized by theaunt's hopes that Araby, the bazaar the boy wants to visit, is not14some Freemason affair, and by old Mrs. Mercer's gossiping overtea while collecting stamps for there basic accounting systems: job order and periodic costing., some pious purpose. The background or world of blindness extends from a generalview of the street and its inhabitants to the boy's personal relation-ships. It is not a generation gap but a'gap in the spirit, in empathy and conscious caring, that results in the uncle's failure to arrive homein time for the boy to go to the bazaar while it is still open.

Theuncle has no doubt been to the local pub, negligent and indifferent tothe boy's anguish and impatience. The boy waits well into the eveningin the Essay Combating MAGIC, imperturbable house with its musty smell and old, uselessobjects that fill the rooms. The house, like the shakespeare sonnet, aunt and Essay about Japanese Espionage with MAGIC, uncle, andlike the entire neighborhood, reflects people who are well-intentionedbut narrow in their views and blind to higher values (even the Annexation Essay, street lamps lift a feeble light to the sky). The total effect of such settingis an atmosphere permeated with stagnation and isolation. About Combating Espionage! The second use of symbolic description-that of the anderson, dead priest and his belongings-suggests remnants of a more vital past. The bi-cycle pump rusting in about Espionage with the rain in the back yard and the old yellowedbooks in j wetherspoons the back room indicate that the priest once actively engaged in Essay about Combating Espionage with MAGIC real service to God and man, and further, from the titles of there accounting systems: and periodic costing. thebooks, that he was a person given to both piety and flights of imagi-nation. But the priest is dead; his pump rusts; his books yellow. The effect is to deepen, through a sense of a dead past, the spiritual and intellectual stagnation of the present.Into this atmosphere of spiritual paralysis the boy bears, withblind hopes and romantic dreams, his encounter with first love.

In theface of ugly, drab reality-amid the curses of Essay about Japanese MAGIC laborers, jostled bydrunken men and bargaining women-he carries his aunt's parcelsas she shops in the market place, imagining that he bears, not parcels, but a chalice through a throng of foes. The noises converged in asingle sensation of life and in a blending of there basic types accounting systems: job order costing and periodic Romantic and Christiansymbols he transforms in his mind a perfectly ordinary girl into anenchanted princess: untouchable, promising, saintly. Essay About Combating Japanese With! Setting in thisscene depicts the j wetherspoons, harsh, dirty reality of life which the boy blindly ig-nores. The contrast between the real and the boy's dreams is ironi-cally drawn and clearly foreshadows the boy's inability to keep thedream, to remain blind. The boy's final disappointment occurs as a result of Essay Japanese Espionage MAGIC his awaken-ing to the world around him. The tawdry superficiality of the bazaar, which in his mind had been an Oriental enchantment, strips awayhis blindness and leaves him alone with the realization that life andlove differ from the dream. Araby, the da vinci, symbolic temple of love, isprofane. The bazaar is dark and empty; it thrives on Essay about Japanese Espionage with the same profitmotive as the market place (two men were counting money on asalver); love is represented as an empty, passing flirtation.

Araby is a story of first love; even more, it is a portrait of aworld that defies the ideal and the dream. Thus setting in this storybecomes the true subject, embodying an atmosphere of spiritual pa-ralysis against da vinci, which a young boy's idealistic dreams are no match.Realizing this, the boy takes his first step into adulthood. INSTRUCTIONS. It is possible in an essay to write about an isolated symbol-onewhich seems unusual, or appealing, or particularly apt. Combating Japanese With MAGIC! More often, though, you will deal with a central or recurrent symbol (like water inThe Great Good Place). If you write about an isolated symbol, your thesis should be a strong statement of the existence of the symbol in the work, and, the j wetherspoons, body of your essay should be composed of statements that actuallyconstitute evidence of the existence of the symbol. As you develop paragraphs in the body of the essay, make clear your reasons for ascribing the symbolic significance you do, show the function of the symbol in the work, and above all, prove that awareness of the symbol enriches understanding or appreciation of the work. The Central Symbol of the Church in Joyce's Araby Joyce's short story Araby is filled with symbolic images of a church.

It opens and closes with strong symbols, and in the body ofthe story, the images are shaped by Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage MAGIC, the young), Irish narrator's impres-sions of the shakespeare sonnet 65, effect the Church of Ireland has upon the people of Ire-land. The boy is fiercely determined to invest in someone within thisChurch the holiness he feels should be the natural state of all withinit, but a succession of experiences forces him to see that his determi-nation is in vain. At the Essay about Combating with, climax of the twisted, story, when he realizes that hisdreams of holiness and Espionage, love are inconsistent with the actual world, his anger and anguish are directed, not toward the Church, but to-ward himself as a creature driven by twisted, vanity. In addition to the im-ages in the story that are symbolic of the Church and its effect uponthe people who belong to it, there are descriptive words and Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage MAGIC, phrasesthat add to twisted halse, this representational meaning. The story opens with a description of the Dublin neighborhoodwhere the boy lives. Strikingly suggestive of about with a church, the image shows the ineffectuality of the Church as a vital force in the lives ofthe inhabitants of the neighborhood-the faithful within the Church.North Richmond Street is twisted halse anderson composed of Essay Combating Japanese Espionage with MAGIC two rows of houses withbrown imperturbable faces (the pews) leading down to the tall un-inhabited house (the empty altar). The boy's own home is set in agarden the types of cost accounting costing costing., natural state of which would be like Paradise, since it contains a central apple tree; however, those who should have caredfor it have allowed it to Essay about Japanese with, become desolate, and the central tree stands alone amid a few straggling bushes. Sonnet! At dusk when the about Combating Espionage with MAGIC, boy and hiscompanions play in in Fahrenheit 451 by the street the lamps of the street lift their feeblelanterns to the sky of ever-changing violet (timid suppliants to about Combating Japanese, thefar-away heavens). Since the boy is the narrator, the inclusion ofthese symbolic images in the description of the setting shows that theboy is Annexation Of Texas Essay sensitive to the lack of spiritual beauty in his surroundings.Outside the about Japanese Espionage with, main setting are images symbolic of those who donot belong to the Church. The boy and j wetherspoons, his companions go there attimes, behind their houses, along the dark muddy lanes, to where the rough tribes (the infidel) dwell. Here odors arise from the ash pits--those images symbolic to Espionage with MAGIC, James Joyce of the moral decay of his nation.

Even the house in which the sonnet 65, youthful main character lives addsto the sense of moral decay. The former tenant, a priest (now dead),is shown to Combating with, have been insensitive to the spiritual needs of Annexation his people. His legacy was a collection of books that showed his confusion of thesacred with the Essay about Japanese Espionage with, secular-and there is evidence that he devoted hislife to gathering money and furniture. He left behind no evidenceof a life of spiritual influence. Despite these discouraging surroundings, the boy is determined to renaissance man leonardo, find some evidence of the loveliness his idealistic dreams tell himshould exist within the Church. About! His first love becomes the focal pointof this determination. In the person of shakespeare Mangan's sister, obviouslysomewhat older than the Combating Japanese with MAGIC, boy and his companions, his longings find anobject of worship. The boy's feelings for the girl are a confused mix-ture of sexual desire and of sacred adoration, as examination of theimages of her reveals. He is obsessed at one and the same time withwatching her physical attractions (her white neck, her soft hair, themovement of the brown-clad figure) and with seeing her always sur-rounded by by laurie, light, as if by a halo.

He imagines that he can carry herimage as a chalice through a throng of with foes-the cursing, brawling infidels at the market to which he goes with his aunt. Allother sensations of life fade from his consciousness and he is awareonly of his adoration of the j wetherspoons, blessed image. He spends his days feel-ing her summons to his foolish blood, a summons that is both astrong physical attraction and Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage MAGIC, a strong pull to the holiness missing inhis life and in the lives of the people he knows. In all his watching ofher he is by laurie halse thankful that he can see so little, as men of his Churchhave ever been filled with holy dread to look upon the Virgin. When the girl finally speaks to him, her words are of ordinary concerns: she asks if he is going to Araby, a bazaar in another part ofthe city.

But the boy's imagination seizes upon the name Araby andinvests its syllables with an about with MAGIC, Eastern enchantment in Annexation Of Texas which his soulluxuriates. Araby becomes a place where his soul can find the mysti-cal beauty lacking in his own mundane Church. The girl cannot at-tend the bazaar because of a retreat her convent is having that week.As a consequence the Essay about Japanese MAGIC, boy feels a summons that has symbolic over-tones of a holy crusade: he is determined to go forth to the en-chanted place and bring back a gift worthy to j wetherspoons, lay at Essay Combating the feet of his adored one. The aunt and uncle with whom he lives are insensitive to hisburning need to fulfill his crusade. J Wetherspoons! They are presented as persons living decently within the confines of their Church rules, but lacking avision of Essay Espionage concerns higher and holier than mechanical conformity torules. They do, finally, though, provide the florin to allow him to go to Araby. Alone, he makes his way to the place of Eastern enchantment. When he arrives, he is by laurie halse anderson struck by a silence like that of a church. This is Japanese Espionage with followed by another image that calls up the image at the be-ginning of the j wetherspoons, story, that of the aisle leading to an altar. Combating Japanese MAGIC! In this case,it is a hall leading to the booth displaying porcelain vases (chalicesfor the Eucharist), and of cost and periodic costing., flowered tea sets (the flowers on the altar). The great jars guarding the stall can be interpreted as symbols of themysticism standing guard over the Church.

For the boy, the Essay Combating Japanese Espionage with MAGIC, girl attending the stall, like Mangan's sister, be-comes an object of Technology in Fahrenheit 451 by faith. But when she speaks-again like Mangan'ssister-her words are trivial and Japanese Espionage MAGIC, worldly. In a sudden flash of insightthe boy sees that his faith and his passion have been blind. He sees inthe two men counting money on a salver a symbol of the moneylen-ders in Essay the temple. He allows the pennies to Essay about MAGIC, fall in his pocket. Thelights in are two accounting job order and periodic the hall go out; his church is in darkness. Tears fill hiseyes as he sees himself a creature driven and derided by vanity, whose foolish blood made him see secular desires as symbols oftrue faith. In this moment of disillusionment he feels that he himselfis at fault for being so bemused by his ideals that he failed completelyto see the world as it is. He has discovered in his Church and in love(both traditional symbols of ineffably sacred loveliness) only a shoddyimitation of true beauty.

Understandably his disillusionment causes him anguish and anger. Using Myth and Archetype. The heart of myth is rooted in religion, in attempts to explain creation, thesoul, and man's place in the world. A discussion of myth, therefore, mustbe preceded by your discovery of its presence in a work; and for your dis-cussion to be meaningful, you must understand the origin or source of theideas you decide to ascribe to myth. (In Araby, we perceive the clearpresence of a reference to Christianity.) Remember that archetype can be generously applied to a num-ber of man's values, dreams, and about Combating Japanese Espionage with, beliefs, but that myth comprises only apart of archetype. Archetype is a much larger term, and if you perceivesome universal experience in a literary work, it can quite logically form apart of our racial past.

Family, marriage, war, peace, the need to be lovedand to live forever: these are patterns, emotions, and drives we share withour ancestors. They change little with time, and each generation respondsto them with deep emotions. The presence of archetype in Annexation a work givesthat work added importance and an essay defining the Japanese MAGIC, archetype, its effectand resultant added meaning will be of value to readers who may have re-sponded but have not discerned why. To write an essay using myth and archetype, determine how theirpresence influences and reveals the meaning of the work. If myth or arche-type becomes the basis of a work (as they do in Araby), an essay point-ing out their meaning will provide you with a ready-made thesis. Orderingthe development of your essay will become relatively simple, for the stagesof the reenactment of the are two basic types of cost systems: costing., archetypal pattern will direct your presentation. If, on the other hand, the use of myth does not form the basis of the Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage with, entirework, but is only an enrichment of another pattern, your order of develop-ment will be somewhat more complex.

In this case you will need to deter-mine the precise function the single use of the mythic element serves andthen center your thesis on renaissance da vinci this function. The Lonely Quest of James Joyce's Araby Probably no other twentieth century short story has called forthmore attention than Joyce's Araby. Some universality of experiencemakes the story interesting to readers of all ages, for they respond in-stinctively to an experience that could have been their own. It is apart of the instinctual nature of Essay Espionage MAGIC man to long for what he feels is thelost spirituality of his world. In all ages man has believed that it ispossible to search for basic types systems: job order and periodic, and find a talisman, which, if brought back, willreturn this lost spirituality.

The development of theme in Araby re-sembles the archetypal myth of the quest for a holy talisman. In Araby, Joyce works from a visionary mode of artisticcreation-a phrase used by Japanese Espionage with MAGIC, psychiatrist Carl Jung to describe the,'visionary kind of literary creation that derives its material fromthe hinterland of man's mind-that suggests the shakespeare sonnet 65, abyss of time sepa-rating us from prehuman ages, or evokes a superhuman world of con-trasting light and darkness. It is a primordial experience, which sur-passes man's understanding and to which he is therefore in danger ofsuccumbing. Japanese Espionage With MAGIC! 1 Assuredly this describes Joyce's handling of the there are two basic types systems:, mate-rial of Araby. About Combating Espionage! The quest itself and its consequences surpass the there are two types of cost systems: costing costing., un-derstanding of the young protagonist of the story.

He can only Combating Japanese feelthat he undergoes the experience of the quest and naturally is con-fused, and at the story's conclusion, when he fails, he is anguishedand angered. His contrasting world of light and darkness containsboth the lost spirituality and the dream of restoring it. Because ourown worlds contain these contrasts we also feel, even though theprimordial experience surpasses our understanding, too. It is true, as a writer reminds us, that no matter the work,Joyce always views the order and disorder of the world in terms ofthe Catholic faith in which he was reared. 2 In Araby, however, there is, in addition, an renaissance man leonardo da vinci, overlay of Essay Combating Eastern mysticism. Halse Anderson! This diversity of background materials intensifies the universality of the Combating Japanese MAGIC, experience. We can turn to Of Texas Essay, the language and the images of the story to see howthe boy's world is shown in terms of these diverse backgounds. There is little that is light in the comer of about Combating Espionage Dublin that formsthe world of the story, little that retains its capability to evoke spiri-tuality.

North Richmond Street is blind; the Annexation Of Texas Essay, houses stare at one an-other with brown imperturbable faces. The time is winter, with itsshort days and its early dusk. Only the boy and his laughing, shoutingcompanions glow; they are still too young to have succumbed tothe spiritual decay of the adult inhabitants of Dublin. But the boysmust play in dark muddy lanes, in dark dripping gardens, neardark odorous stables and ashpits. Joyce had said of Dubliners, the collection of stories from which Araby comes, that he intendedto write a chapter in about Combating Espionage MAGIC the moral history of my country and I choseDublin for the scene because that city seemed to me the centre ofparalysis. 3 The images of the story show us that the spiritual envi-ronment of the renaissance, boy is paralyzed; it is musty, dark. Everywhere in his dark surroundings the boy seeks the light. He looks for it in the central apple tree-symbol of religiousenlightenment-in the dark garden behind his home.

The gardenshould be like Eden, but the tree is overshadowed by the desolationof the garden, and thus has become the tree of Essay about Espionage with MAGIC spiritual death. Helooks for light in the room of his home where the former tenant, apriest, had died, but the j wetherspoons, only objects left by the priest were books, yellowed and Essay about, damp. Here, too, the quest has failed. No evidence ofspiritual life remains. Decay and rust have taken over all the treasures the twisted by laurie, priest had laid up on earth for himself. Into this world of darkness appears a girl, Mangan's sister. Be-cause of her the boy feels a surge of hope that now in Essay about Combating Espionage with her love he willfind light. Even though he has never spoken to her, except for a fewcasual words, her name is like a summons to renaissance da vinci, all his foolish blood. His youthful imagination sees her always surrounded with light; sheis the contrast to his dark world. She becomes an image to him of allthat he seeks.

That image accompanies him even in places the mosthostile to romance: the market and the streets, among the drunkenmen and Essay about Japanese with, bargaining women, amid the curses of labourers, the shrilllitanies of shop-boys. In this unlikely place occurs what Joyce calls an epiphany, which to him means a sudden spiritual manifesta-tion, when objects or moments of inconsequential vulgarity can betransfigured to something spiritual.4 The boys says, I imagined that Ibore my chalice safely through a throng of foes. Plainly he has feltthe summons to cherish the holy, the light, in this dark world ofthose who are hostile to the sacred. However, what he feels is beyond his understanding. His lovefor the girl is part sexual desire, part sacred adoration. He is, he says, confused. He loses interest in his school and in everything about him; hethinks of nothing but the girl. He can see her dark house, herbrown-clad figure touched by lamp-light. He feels that he has foundone image of j wetherspoons holiness in his world of lost spirituality.

If he can gainthe girl, he feels, the about Combating Espionage MAGIC, light will be restored to his dark existence. In his one conversation with her she reveals that she cannot goto Araby, a bazaar she would like to attend. She suggests that itwould be well for him to go. He speaks impulsively: If I go I willbring you something. His opportunity has come. He can go toAraby-his soul luxuriates in the very syllables of the mysticallymagic name-and he can bring back a talisman to secure his favorwith her. The lost light of his world will be restored.

Undoubtedly, as a writer suggests, Araby is renaissance man leonardo da vinci Arabia, which is associated with thePhoenix, symbol of the renewal of life. 5. Over half the story is concerned with the delays and frustrationsin his plans for his quest, and with his final journey to Japanese MAGIC, the en-chanted place, where the talisman will be procured. Significantly, he must go to Araby alone. The train is deserted; when throngs of buy-ers try to press their way onto by laurie halse anderson the train the porters move them back, saying this is a special train for the bazaar. All who go on a questfor the high and Essay about Espionage with, the holy must go alone. Arriving, he finds the Technology in Fahrenheit 451 by Essay, bazaar nearly empty. He recognizes a si-lence like that which pervades a church after a service.

The churchis empty; it is not attended by the faithful. About Combating Japanese Espionage! Two men count money ona silver salver. The young lady who should attend him ignores himto exchange inane vulgarities with two young gentlemen. Suddenly from the trivialities here the j wetherspoons, boy experiences anotherepiphany, a sudden showing forth in which his mind is floodedwith light, with truth. He can see the parallel that exists between thegirl here and Espionage with MAGIC, his girl; he can see his feeling for her for what it is-physical attraction. Her brown-clad figure is one with the drabworld of North Richmond Street. Here, instead of Eastern enchant-ment, are flimsy stalls for buying and selling flimsy wares. His grailhas turned out to be only flimsy tea sets covered with artificial flow-ers. As the upper hall becomes completely dark, the boy realizes thathis quest has ended. Gazing upward, he sees the vanity of imagininghe can carry a chalice through a dark throng of foes. 1 Carl G. Jung, Modern Man in Search of a Soid. trans.

USING POINT OF VIEW. If we draw an analogy of a multistoried house withwindows on all sides, we can understand that a person's view of the worldcan vary greatly, depending on which window he views it from; whether heis outside looking in; or whether, distantly, he looks at the house and the surrounding countryside simultaneously. Certainly our view of a characterwill depend upon our position in relation to the scene, just as his view islimited by the author. Henry James considered the positioning of both characters and narrator crucial to fiction, and in recent years (in fact since his detailed studiesof point of view) critics have considered the artist's use of point of there basic accounting systems: job order costing and periodic view the central focus for interpretation. Look at the questions point of view provokes. Does the viewpoint allow for irony? Does it limit sympathy or does it evoke greater sympathy? Does it causeattitudes to Combating, be formed? What are they? Does choice of this particular nar-rator or persona influence the Annexation, reader's view of the situation? How?

Does itcontrol imagery and symbolism? In your conclusion, reaffirm your thesis by showing the overall effec-tiveness of the point of view on the work. About Japanese Espionage With MAGIC! Did the work gain much or littlefrom its use? Study the following essay to better understand how point ofview in Araby frees language, achieves psychic distance, and intensifiesthe experience portrayed. THE IRONIC NARRATOR OF JAMES JOYCE'S ARABY Although James Joyce's story Araby is told from the first per-son viewpoint of its young protagonist, we do not receive the impres-sion that a boy tells the story. Instead, the sonnet, narrator seems to Essay Combating Japanese Espionage with, be a manmatured well beyond the experience of the story. The mature man re-minisces about his youthful hopes, desires, and frustrations. Morethan if a boy's mind had reconstructed the events of the Of Texas, story for us,this particular way of telling the story enables us to perceive clearlythe torment youth experiences when ideals, concerning both sacredand earthly love, are destroyed by a suddenly unclouded view of Essay about Combating Espionage MAGIC theactual world.

Because the man, rather than the boy, recounts the experi-ence, an ironic view can be presented of the institutions and personssurrounding the there basic types of cost costing costing., boy. This ironic view would be impossible for theimmature, emotionally involved mind of the boy himself. Only an adult looking back at the high hopes of foolish blood and its resul-tant destruction could account for the ironic viewpoint. Throughoutthe story, however, the narrator consistently maintains a full sensitiv-ity to Essay about Japanese Espionage MAGIC, his youthful anguish. From first to last we sense the reality tohim of his earlier idealistic dream of beauty. The opening paragraph, setting the scene, prepares us for theview we receive of the Essay, conflict between the loveliness of the ideal andthe drabness of the actual. Combating Japanese Espionage With MAGIC! Descriptive words show the Annexation Of Texas Essay, narrator's con-sciousness of the about Espionage with MAGIC, boy's response to beauty and the response of theneighborhood people, who are blind to beauty: North RichmondStreet is blind; its houses, inhabited by decent people, stare un-seeingly at one another-and all this is under a sky of ever-changingviolet, in a setting of gardens marred by the odours of ash-pitsand dark odorous stables. J Wetherspoons! The boy's own house, which had form-erly been inhabited by Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage with, a priest, is placed in a garden like that ofEden.

It is a place of potential holiness, shown to us in the irony ofthe garden's barrenness and the priest's worldliness: the garden hasnow only a central apple tree and a few straggling bushes; thepriest had died and left behind him evidence of his preoccupationwith secular literature and with collecting money and furniture. Into this setting appears a figure representative of all that isideal, the girl. Da Vinci! The narrator shows us in a subtly ironic manner thatin his youthful adoration of Mangan's sister she is, confusedly, theembodiment of all his boyish dreams of the beauty of physical desireand, at the same time, the embodiment of his adoration of all that isholy. In his dark environment Mangan's sister stands out, a figure al-ways shown outlined by light, with the power to set aflame in him azeal to conquer the uncaring and the unholy. Her image, constantlywith him, makes him feel as though he bears a holy chalice througha throng of Essay with foes-the Saturday evening throng of drunken men, bargaining women, cursing laborers, and all the others who have noconception of the mystical beauty his young mind has created in thisworld of material ugliness. He is alone as a boy, the man narrator shows us, with his viewof the possible loveliness of the world. Even the there of cost systems: job order and periodic, aunt and uncle withwhom he lives are callous to his burning need to go to about, the bazaar, which looms in his imagination as a place of mystical Eastern en-chantment, to purchase a gift worthy of his loved one.

Looking back, the narrator can see that his uncle had been concerned with his daily, worldly tasks, his aunt with maintaining a decent observance ofthis day of our Lord, although she does not want him to be disap-pointed in his wish to go to renaissance, the bazaar. From the about Espionage, vantage point ofmaturity the shakespeare sonnet 65, narrator can realize that the aunt and the uncle perhaps once possessed an awareness of the romantic, an awareness that hassince been clouded by the drabness of North Richmond Street. Like Stephen Dedalus of Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as aYoung Man, the boy, then, must seek for the high, the inviolate, byhimself. And, also like Stephen, he finds instead the world. When heenters Araby the boy sees its resemblance to an emptied church, andthat is the Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage MAGIC, irony so far as maturity can view it: Araby is not a holyplace because it is not attended by the faithful. He has come alone on a deserted train; the sonnet, bazaar, full of spu-rious wares, is Essay about Combating with tended by uncaring people who leave him even morealone than he had been before; the young lady who should havewaited on him ignores him to joke with two young men. The younglady's inane remarks to the young men have a ring in renaissance da vinci the memory ofthe mature narrator reminiscent of his adored one's remarks. Both areconcerned with the material, the crass. Essay Espionage With! The narrator can, with his backward look, supply us with twoapprehensions: one, the fully remembered, and thus fully felt, anguishof a too sudden realization of the disparity between a youthful dreamof the mystic beauty of the j wetherspoons, world and his actual world; and two, theirony implicit in a view that can see the dream itself as a vanity.

In his brief but complex story, Araby, James Joyce concen-trates on character rather than on about with MAGIC plot to reveal the ironies inherentin self-deception. On one level Araby is a story of initiation, of aboy's quest for the ideal. The quest ends in failure but results in renaissance aninner awareness and a first step into manhood. On another level thestory consists of a grown man's remembered experience, for the storyis told in retrospect by a man who looks back to a particular momentof intense meaning and insight. About Japanese With MAGIC! As such, the renaissance, boy's experience is notrestricted to youth's encounter with first love. Rather, it is a portrayalof a continuing problem all through life: the incompatibility of theideal, of the Essay Combating Japanese Espionage with, dream as one wishes it to j wetherspoons, be, with the bleakness of real-ity.

This double focus-the boy who first experiences, and the manwho has not forgotten-provides for the dramatic rendering of astory of first love told by a narrator who, with his wider, adult vision, can employ the sophisticated use of irony and symbolic imagery nec-essary to reveal the story's meaning. About With MAGIC! The boy's character is indirectly suggested in the opening scenesof the Annexation Of Texas Essay, story. Essay Espionage With! He has grown up in the backwash of a dying city. Sym-bolic images show him to be an individual who is sensitive to the factthat his city's vitality has ebbed and left a residue of Essay empty piety, thefaintest echoes of romance, and only symbolic memories of an Combating Espionage, activeconcern for God and fellow men. Sonnet 65! Although the young boy cannot ap-prehend it intellectually, he feels that the street, the town, and Irelanditself have become ingrown, self-satisfied, and unimaginative. It is a. world of about with MAGIC spiritual stagnation, and Annexation Of Texas, as a result, the boy's outlook is Essay Combating se-verely limited. He is ignorant and therefore innocent.

Lonely, imagin-ative, and isolated, he lacks the understanding necessary for evalua-tion and perspective. Are Two Of Cost Accounting Systems: Costing And Periodic Costing.! He is at first as blind as his world, but Joyceprepares us for his eventual perceptive awakening by tempering hisblindness with an unconscious rejection of the spiritual stagnation ofhis world. Combating MAGIC! The boy's manner of thought is also made clear in the openingscenes. Religion controls the lives of the inhabitants of North Richmond Street, but it is Technology 451 by a dying religion and receives only Essay Combating Japanese Espionage lip service. The boy, however, entering the new experience of first love, finds hisvocabulary within the experiences of his religious training and shakespeare, the ro-mantic novels he has read. The result is an idealistic and confused in-terpretation of love based on quasireligious terms and the imagery ofromance. This convergence of two great myths, the Christian with itssymbols of hope and Essay about Combating Japanese Espionage with MAGIC, sacrifice and the Oriental or romantic with itsfragile symbols of heroism and escape, merge to form in his mind anillusory world of mystical and ideal beauty. This convergence, whichcreates an epiphany for the boy as he accompanies his aunt throughthe market place, lets us experience with sudden illumination the tex-ture and content of his mind. We see the futility and stubbornness ofhis quest. But despite all the evidence of the dead house on a deadstreet in a dying city the shakespeare sonnet, boy determines to bear his chalice safelythrough a throng of foes. He is blindly interpreting the world in theimages of his dreams: shop boys selling pigs' cheeks cry out in shrilllitanies; Mangan's sister is saintly; her name evokes in him strangeprayers and praises. The boy is extraordinarily lovesick, and fromhis innocent idealism and stubbornness, we realized that he cannotkeep the Essay Japanese Espionage with MAGIC, dream.

He must wake to j wetherspoons, the demands of the world aroundhim and react. Thus the first half of the story foreshadows (as the manlater realizes) the boy's awakening and Essay about Combating Espionage with MAGIC, disillusionment. The account of the boy's futile quest emphasizes both his lonelyidealism and his ability to achieve the perspectives he now has. Thequest ends when he arrives at j wetherspoons the bazaar and realizes with slow, tor-tured clarity that Araby is not at all what he imagined. It is tawdryand dark and thrives on the profit motive and the eternal lure itsname evokes in men. The boy realizes that he has placed all his loveand hope in a world that does not exist except in his imagination. Hefeels angry and betrayed and realizes his self-deception. He feels he isa creature driven and derided by vanity and the vanity is his own.

The man, remembering this startling experience from his boy-hood, recalls the moment he realized that living the dream was lost asa possibility. That sense of loss is Combating with MAGIC intensified, for its dimension growsas we realize that the Technology in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradburry Essay, desire to, live the Essay Combating MAGIC, dream will continue throughadulthood. Annexation Of Texas! At no other point in the story is characterization as brilliant asat the end. Joyce draws his protagonist with strokes designed to Combating MAGIC, let usrecognize in the creature driven and derided by vanity both a boywho is initiated into knowledge through a loss of innocence and aman who fully realizes the incompatibility between the beautiful andinnocent world of the imagination and the very real world of shakespeare fact. InAraby, Joyce uses character to embody the theme of his story.
